What is a UNESCO World Heritage Site?
UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) was founded in 1945 and is based in Paris. Its World Heritage Programme is based on the World Heritage Convention of 1972 (in force since 1975) and has since protected cultural and natural sites of outstanding importance to mankind as a whole. The first sites were inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1978, including Aachen Cathedral. Today, there are over 1,200 World Heritage Sites worldwide and 54 in Germany alone.
